Save The Birds!

Research has shown that we have lost almost 3 billion birds since 1970. Some of the hardest hit species include Meadowlarks, Orioles, Warblers and Swallows. Reasons for this include loss of habitat, free-roaming cats, collisions with glass, toxic pesticides and insect declines. This graphic shows 7 ways you can help save the birds. It’s not too late, we can make a change.

  1. Make Windows Safer – install screens or break up reflections using film, paint or Acopian BirdSavers.
  2. Keep Cats Indoors – Aside from habitat loss this is the #1 human-caused reason for the loss of birds.
  3. Reduce Lawn, Plant Natives – Birds have fewer places to safely rest during migration and to raise their young. Planting native plants will attract birds and give them food to eat and a place to rest.
  4. Avoid Pesticides – Pesticides are toxic to birds through direct contact or through ingesting seeds or prey. Pesticides also reduce the number of insects available for birds to eat.
  5. Drink Bird Friendly Coffee – Shade-grown coffe is good for birds. It helps more than 42 species of North American migratory songbirds that winter in coffee plantations, including Orioles, Warblers and Thrushes.
  6. Protect Our Planet from Plastics – Choose reusable items instead of disposable plastic bags, bottles, wrapes and utensils.
  7. Watch Birds Share What You See – Join a project such as eBird, Project FeederWatch, Christmas Bird Count or a Breeding Bird Survey to record you observations. Your contributions will provide valuable information to show where birds are thriving and where they need help.
